Spiders that hunt at night often have a special layer at the back of their big eyes. It acts like a mirror to bounce light back into the eyes. On a dark night, this reflected light makes the spider's eyes seem to glow!
Growing pains
Growing pains In Costa Rica, foreign companies have started
paying farmers to plant forests on their land as part of a protocol
developed at the Kyoto UN Summit on Climate Change which took place
in December 1997. The protocol involves allowing countries to meet
part of their target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by
planting forests to soak up carbon dioxide emissions instead of
actually cutting emissions.
It is hoped that this program will encourage the preservation of
the world's forests and promote reforestation of previously logged
areas. There are, however, a number of problems with this program,
one of which is that there is no way to accurately measure how much
carbon dioxide is being absorbed by the trees. 24 OCTOBER 1998, P. 20-21
