White tree frogs have such big appetites that they sometimes eat rats.
The Amazon - kinder cuts
The Amazon - kinder cuts Paragominas, a town in the eastern Amazon state of
Para, has one of the highest concentrations of sawmills in the
world. Much of the surrounding forests have been protected by their
sheer inaccessibility, as the vast majority of Amazonia is without
roads. However, the Belem-Brasilia highway, built in 1965, is
starting to change all that. This is a major concern to many
ecologists as the effects of logging are shocking.
Ecologist Chris Uhl is looking at alternatives to help to make
logging both efficient and sustainable in the Amazon. It is not an
easy task, though, to convince loggers to adopt new practices.
These new techniques need the investment of money and time now,
with the major return coming 30 to 40 years later. Many people are
not willing to wait that long for a return on their
investment. 21 SEPTEMBER 1996, P. 40-41
