Many of the world's conifer species are under threat. Some no longer exist in the wild, but are grown only in cultivated plots. Many of the world's more isolated conifer populations are small and are under the most threat according to the authors of an Action Plan for Conifers, which was written for the World Conservation Union. The Action Plan says that there are a number of areas which need to be protected and that a seed bank of conifers should be established to guard against species extinction.
