Earthweek: coffee plague
An incurable tree root disease, ‘coffee wilt disease’ or CWD, has attacked and killed more than 9 million Arabica coffee trees in Uganda. This fungal disease destroys the roots of trees and causes them to die. The concern is that if CWD spreads, the Ugandan coffee industry, upon which more than 1.5 million homes depend, could be crippled. Coffee is the leading foreign exchange earner for Uganda.
