Lynx have adapted to life in the snow. They have huge feet that function as snow-shoes, allowing this tufted-eared cat to hunt in deep snow country without wasting energy by breaking trails.
Genetic engineers turn normal cells cancerous
Genetic engineers turn normal cells cancerous Researchers led by Dr Robert Weinberg of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Whitehead Institute for
Biomedical Research have successfully created a cancerous human
cell by using genetic manipulation of a normal cell. Scientists had
not previously been able to create specific genetic flaws in cells.
This research will allow scientists to create specific cancerous
genetic flaws in cells and then test cancer treatments on them to
see what corrects the genetic flaws. The findings are significant
to the development of new treatments for cancer in the future.
Current cancer treatments focus on trying to destroy the cancerous
cells and have detrimental side effects on the patient. This
research will allow investigators to carry out further work on
treating cancer by correcting the genetic flaws which can cause
cells to become cancerous. 29 JULY 1999
