New drugs are being developed for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Several new types of therapies are being developed, including chemotherapies, experimental vaccines, and drugs that interfere with the genetic machinery of pancreatic cancer cells. The most promising new chemotherapy drug is called "9-nitrocamptothecin", or "9-nc". "9-nc" was developed from a compound called "camptothecin", which is found in the Chinese tree, "camptotheca acuminata". It disrupts cell replication and is currently in advanced human trials. Drugs which target specific genes involved in forming tumors are also being developed.
