Study finds ginseng reduces blood sugar

Study finds ginseng reduces blood sugar
A Canadian study published today reports that at least one species of ginseng is beneficial to people who suffer from diabetes, because it lowers their blood sugar. The study was conducted in Ontario by Dr Vladimir Vuksan of the University of Toronto, using a species widely grown in Ontario known as American ginseng (panax quinquefolia). Dr Vuksan followed 10 people with diabetes and 9 people without the disease and discovered that by taking just 3 grams of ginseng before or during the meal, their blood-sugar levels dropped by 20 per cent. If these results can be sustained over a long period of time, people with diabetes could be saved from many of the complications that can occur with the condition. It has already been shown, in 1998, that strict blood-sugar and blood-pressure control can reduce incidence of damage to nerves, kidneys and eyes. Ginseng may turn out to be a viable natural alternative to traditional medications but more research is needed before this can be confirmed.
