Sumatran tiger a separate species

Sumatran tiger a separate species
An American Museum of Natural History research project suggests that the Sumatran tiger is a separate species from other tigers. DNA comparison of different types of tigers was used to make this finding. Sumatran tigers have a very small population, and researchers say that finding that they are a separate species means that extra effort needs to be made to save them. There are only about 400 or 500 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. They are the smallest tigers and weigh only 100 to 140 kilograms.
