Skunk cabbage is one of the first plants to sprout in the springtime in the Northern Hemisphere. The plant itself is 20?C (76?F) warmer than the surrounding air, and it melts the snow around itself so that the shoots can sprout upwards.

French researchers have found that bacterial spores being used as an organic pesticide may be harmful to humans. When tested on mice, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) killed some mice and caused lung inflammation in others when inhaled. Their report indicates that Bt may not be as safe to use as had previously been believed.
