Dormant bacterial spores that had been trapped in salt crystals for 250 million years were found more than 500 metres underground in a salt mine in New Mexico. The microbes have been revived and are the oldest living things yet discovered. Salt loving or "halophilic" microbes are a common part of most people’s diets, although people don’t know this. Think what you’re eating next time you sprinkle salt on your food!
