Wind breakers
Wind breakers Scientists have finally succeeded in growing in
the lab a corkscrew-shaped kind of bacteria that lives in the
intestines of termites. These bacteria curb the termites’
output of methane. It is hoped that this discovery may lead to the
use of these bacteria to control the emission of methane by other
microbes. Methane gas is a major contributor to global
warming. 6 FEBRUARY 1999, P. 17
