Setting up man's likely interplanetary travel base is not all
excitement Two Russians and an American have arrived aboard a
capsule at the International Space Station (ISS). They will spend
118 days aboard the ISS, which is going to be continuously
inhabited by a series of crews for the next 15 years. The
astronauts face the next 4 months in cramped surroundings, and a
boring diet of freeze-dried food, canned food, and soup and fruit
juice in tubes. The astronauts must exercise for 2 to 3 hours a day
in order to counteract the harmful effect of weightlessness on
their muscles. The astronauts face a busy work schedule, as they
prepare the orbiting station for the crew that will replace them in
February. When the station is finally completed in 2006, it will be
one of the brightest objects in the sky, and weigh as much as 418
tonnes. NOVEMBER 3, 2000
