The Johnny Appleseed of mushrooms has a dire warning about the
future of fungi
The Johnny Appleseed of mushrooms has a dire warning about the
future of fungi Larry Lonik, an expert on mushrooms from Detroit,
Michigan, warns that when mushrooms are picked they should be
carried and stored in mesh bags - not in air-tight plastic bags -
so that the mushrooms don't decay. More importantly, when carried
in mesh bags as they are being collected, the spores can fall out
of the bags, spread, and produce more mushrooms. If this change is
not made, mushrooms may slowly die out, as they take five years to
grow. 22 APRIL 1999
