A natural antifreeze found in the blood of Antarctic cod allows them to thrive in icy waters. Scientists have discovered a gene in the fish which, millions of years ago, was copied incorrectly. This gene allowed the natural antifreeze to develop from a digestive protein, aiding the fish to adapt to the freezing waters of the Antarctic.
