The secret language of mantis shrimps

The secret language of mantis shrimps
Researchers in Brisbane, Australia, have discovered that mantis shrimps can see polarised light. These shrimps are the first crustaceans known to have polarisation vision. The human eye cannot detect polarised light but the shrimps have learned to distinguish different polarisation patterns in the lab. Shrimps' bodies carry polarisation patterns that appear striking to fellow mantis shrimps. These patterns are mostly used in threat display, but may also be used to solicit matings.
