When ice covers lakes, there is less oxygen to breathe, and most fish sink to the bottom. They remain very quiet but awake. Carp, however, flap their tails to cover themselves with mud and they go to sleep. When the lake ice melts and the oxygen levels rise they awaken.
Earthweek: earthquakes
Earthweek: earthquakes Iceland was struck by the most powerful
earthquakes it had seen in 90 years during their celebrations of
their national day. Extensive damage was caused by the 6.6 tremor
but there were no injuries as most people were outside to enjoy the
celebrations. Another large quake occurred 4 days later and caused
further damage.
A quake also occurred in northern Italy which caused damage to 2
historic churches, while earth movements were felt in the Cook
Islands, Japan, Chile and Guatemala. 24 JUNE 2000
