Environmentalists are at loggerheads with underwater
foresters Environmentalists are raising alarms about a new
threat to Ontario's lakes and rivers: Underwater loggers. Suporters
say the process of retrieving logs that have lain on lake and river
beds for decades is potentially lucrative, even environmentally
beneficial. Millions of logs sank while being transported from
forest to mill in the days before cranes and trucks, and have
remained there for years, often perfectly prserved.
Environmentalists say that taking the logs out can damage the
underwater ecosystmen because they have become crtitical to the
health of fish. AUGUST 22, 2000
