Water system poses risk for Vancouver
Water system poses risk for Vancouver A Health Canada drinking water expert says that
Vancouver's water system leaves the city at risk for an outbreak of
cryptosporidium. That's the microbe that infected the water of
North Battleford, Sask. and can cause illness. Vancouver and
Winnipeg are the only two major cities in Canada that don't have
the filtration plants that can take cryptosporidium out of the
water. Cryptosporidium is a very tiny microbe that passes through
most standard filter systems, and is not killed by chlorine.
Vancouver water managers say the risk is low because the microbe is
found in animal feces and Vancouver's water comes from clean lakes
and rivers far away from agriculture operations. The water is
tested regularly for cryptosporidium, and plans are underway to
build a $130 million filtration plant by 2005. MAY 9, 2001
