Germ believed a warming foe
Scientists have discovered a bacterium in the acidic peat bogs of western Siberia which reduces methane by 90 per cent, reports the journal 'Science" today. The bacterium, called "Beijerinckia", turns methane into energy before the gas escapes into the atmosphere. It is hoped that this bacterium could eventually work to fight against global warming by getting rid of greenhouse gases before they reach the atmosphere.
