id you know that the more spots a male peacock has on his tail, the more likely he is to father babies, survive harsh winters and escape predators? Scientists think that only the healthiest males have lots of spots and that is why they are more successful than other males.
It never rains
It never rains As weather forecasts become more accurate, they
also become more valuable. The three-day forecasts offered today
are as good as the one-day forecasts offered in 1981. And when
retailers can predict the weather, they can offer goods on sale
which will be snapped up, like ice cream on a hot day, and expand
their sales. The World Meteorological Organization of the United
Nations offers free weather data exchange, but the more accurate -
and therefore more valuable - weather forecasts become, the more
commercial companies are getting into the business. State-owned
weather forecasters are still heavily dependent on their
governments and now must compete with commercial and private
companies who have jumped in to the lucrative business of selling
forecasts. 18 SEPTEMBER 1999
