As weather forecasts become more accurate, they also become more valuable. The three-day forecasts offered today are as good as the one-day forecasts offered in 1981. And when retailers can predict the weather, they can offer goods on sale which will be snapped up, like ice cream on a hot day, and expand their sales. The World Meteorological Organization of the United Nations offers free weather data exchange, but the more accurate - and therefore more valuable - weather forecasts become, the more commercial companies are getting into the business. State-owned weather forecasters are still heavily dependent on their governments and now must compete with commercial and private companies who have jumped in to the lucrative business of selling forecasts.
