Canada offers protective arm to undersea habitat
Canada offers protective arm to undersea habitat Canada has set aside an underwater canyon located
off the coast of Nova Scotia as a marine protected area to preserve
the biodiversity of Canada's marine resources. The canyon, also
known as "The Gully", is an area about 3,000 square kilometers
located just off of the continental shelf. This decision was
important for Canada because The Gully is a species-rich area which
is also inhabited by the bottlenose whales who are on Canada's
endangered species list. The donation of The Gully as a
conservation site came after Canada received poor marks for its
participation in the international protection of endangered
species, and also after Prince Philip's remark that international
action to protect the world's oceans has been "depressingly
inadequate". While the announcement was well-received,
conservationists would have been better pleased if the 1996 UN Fish
Stocks Agreement had also been legally enforced. The agreement was
drafted in 1996 in order to protect marine life but it has not yet
received enough international support to be made law. Britain is
one of the countries that has not yet ratified the agreement, and
when questioned on the issue Prince Philip replied that it will be
public and media pressure that will force governments to take the
matter seriously. The prince suggested an international agency
which would have the power to create and enforce rules to protect
fish stocks. 4 DECEMBER 1998
