Deal saves rare bear's habitat
Deal saves rare bear's habitat British Columbia is banning logging in selected
areas of the Great Bear Rainforest to create a sanctuary for the
white Kermode bear. There are large populations of the bear on
Gribell and Princess Royal islands, off the coast of BC. These
islands are now exempt from logging, as well as other areas of the
rainforest. Logging will still be allowed in certain designated
areas, and forest companies will be compensated as part of the
agreement. APRIL 4, 2001
