Winter bugs called snow fleas are born in icy waters and feed on algae that grows on snow. Spring-tails are also called snow fleas and they leap around on snow banks. They eat the sap which oozes from trees. Spring-tails look very similar to fossils of 300 million years ago!
Keeping track
Keeping track A new hand-held computer tracking device is aiding
researchers to keep track of wild animal populations, and is also
helping to preserve the traditional tracking skills of African
Bushmen. Scientists have provided Bushmen with the computers, which
they use to keep track of any animal species that they observe. The
data collected by the Bushmen trackers is used in conservation, and
also provides a valuable record of how the Bushmen track
animals. 31 OCTOBER 1998, P. 25
