Black spruce grows almost as far north as the Arctic Ocean.
Investigating Bat Habitats in Subalpine British Columbia
Gaps in information about critical species and habitat loss.
Bats play an important role in mountain forest ecology. Researchers from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, captured, radio-tagged and tracked bats in an attempt to better understand their habits and the range of their territories in southwestern coastal British Columbia. They discovered that the bats preferred to roost (sleep) in large, dead or dying trees and that their varied diet helps them to exploit the limited resources of the harsh mountain environment. Understanding the role of bats in southwestern coastal British Columbia will help to identify key habitat elements for conservation. Results from this study suggest that old growth forests of various classes of trees and snags (dead trees) should be kept in order to provide roosting areas both for bats and for other dependent wildlife.
