Investigating Mountain Hemlock Roots to Find Clues to Improve Reforestation

Examining tree root functioning to improve reforestation techniques.
Mountain hemlock trees in the Pacific Northwest adjust their growth to survive harsh environmental conditions. Dr. Reese Halter of Global Forest is investigating the root growth of mountain hemlock trees in different environmental conditions. This research will enable better understanding of how the physiology (functioning) of trees and in particular, their roots, can be adjusted to cope with extreme environmental conditions. Results from this research will be applied to assist artificial reforestation in subalpine (high elevation) environments.
