When hundreds of sharp-toothed piranhas gather to attack, they can kill a cow in minutes!
Borneo's apes face extinction as jungle shrinks
Borneo's apes face extinction as jungle shrinks The orangutans on Borneo Island in Indonesia are
in trouble. Political crisis, economic crisis and communal fighting
means that protecting the species and stopping illegal logging in
national parks is not a high priority. The orangutan habitat is
being destroyed as the hardwood trees are cut down for export,
adults are killed for food, and infants are often sold as pets.
Rehabilitation clinics are vital for the survival of orphaned and
rescued orangutans, but with 95% of the same DNA as humans, the
organutans often suffer from human diseases picked up in the
world's fourth most populous country. It is not only the orangutans
who are threatened by the habitat loss and ongoing war. Asian
elephants, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran tigers are all being
threatened with extinction as poachers and loggers encroach on
their previously isolated homes. MAY 7, 2001
