Great apes find a saviour in UN
Great apes find a saviour in UN UN environmental officials have announced a major
international rescue effort for the great apes. War, destruction of
habitat and poaching have pushed the world's great apes to the
point that it is estimated in 5 to 10 years they will be extinct in
most of their range. The UN Environmental Program's new Great Apes
Survival Project is calling for funding from businesses with
interests in Africa and Southeast Asia. Executive director of the
UNEP said, "We can no longer stand by and watch these wondrous
creatures, some of whom share 98% of the DNA in humans, die
out." MAY 21, 2001
