FACTOID!!
Koalas are marsupials, a mammal that carries its young in a pouch. They live in the Eucalyptus forests of Australia and they only eat the new leaves of a few different types of eucalypt trees. Koala's paws are hand-like, strong, and have very sharp claws to help them hold onto tree trunks and branches.

World's biggest colony of ants being wiped out

World's biggest colony of ants being wiped out
Construction of a new port at Ishikari Bay on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, is destroying the world's largest known colony of ants - Japanese red wood ants. The colony is 20 kilometres long and consists of an estimated 45,000 nests linked by tunnels to form one supercolony. Professor Seigo Higashi has studied the colony for 28 years and thinks that the colony itself could be 1,000 years old. The construction of the new port is covering the area of the colony and killing many of the ants. The ants are not listed as an endangered species and so are not of concern to the Japanese Environment Agency.
