How to love Mother Nature and make money
How to love Mother Nature and make money Economists are finding ways to profit from the
work that nature does. They argue that people will be more willing
to conserve nature if they can make money from it. Economists from
Columbia University give the example of a proposal to restore the
ecology of the New York City watershed. They propose that offering
securities to investors in an ecological cleanup rather than
spending money on a mechanical water filtration plant would both
preserve the ecology of the area and save New York City money while
generating returns on the investors' money. Economists advocating
these ideas say that putting monetary values on natural resources
would encourage business to preserve nature rather than exploit it.
Some researchers and economists disagree with the concept of making
money from nature's work since so many of the processes involved
are hard to quantify and therefore impossible to put a monetary
value on. 6 MARCH 1999
