FACTOID!!
Skunk cabbage is one of the first plants to sprout in the springtime in the Northern Hemisphere. The plant itself is 20?C (76?F) warmer than the surrounding air, and it melts the snow around itself so that the shoots can sprout upwards.

New research is helping to produce methods of blending diesel fuel with water to reduce the pollution produced by diesel motors. These new methods involve mixing water and a surfactant with the diesel fuel. The surfactant allows the water to stay mixed with the diesel fuel, and the water reacts with many of the pollution-causing molecules in the fuel reducing their emission as pollution. It is hoped that one of these methods will be commercially viable so that it can be widely used to reduce air pollution from diesel fuelled vehicles.
