Hurricanes are the largest storms in the world. They are called typhoons in the Western Pacific and the China Sea.
Lumpy fish warn about gene work
Lumpy fish warn about gene work King salmon grown in New Zealand were "test-tube"
creations developed by New Zealand's King Salmon project. King
salmon are normally found only on the northwest coast of North
America. Opponents of the project had been trying to get the
project shut down for more than a year and they recently succeeded.
The project was shut down because reports showed that deformities
had been found in the test-tube fish during the breeding program.
The salmon were fed a growth hormone that enabled them to grow
three times faster than normal but developed "lumpy" heads due to
genetic deformities. Although these "genetically modified" salmon
were expected to grow up to 250 kilograms (where Chinook, or
Pacific king salmon, grow to only 50 kilograms in the wild) risks
associated with tampering with genetics were too apparent. People
have recently been talking about the safety of genetically modified
food and last week a conference was held in Edinburgh on the
subject. Results from conference talks show that more research is
needed before genetically modified food can be proved safe for
human consumption. 7 MARCH 2000
