Rebirth of Tasmanian tiger attempted

Rebirth of Tasmanian tiger attempted
The last Tasmanian tiger, also known as the thylacine, died in captivity in 1936. However, Australian biologists believe they may be able to bring the animal back from extinction through cloning by using DNA taken from a museum specimen which has been preserved in alcohol since 1866. Small samples of heart, liver, muscle and bone marrow tissue have been extracted from the preserved specimen, and biologists are now trying to unravel the tiger’s genetic code. The tiger’s genetic blueprint will be inserted into the egg of a close relative, such as the Tasmanian devil or the numbat, for incubation. The Tasmanian tiger once roamed mainland Australia and New Guinea, but was killed off by wild dogs introduced by humans about 6000 years ago. In Tasmania, trapping caused the disappearance of the tiger.
