Leave forests in public hands
Leave forests in public hands The government has recently offered compensation
packages to two large timber companies, MacMillan Bloedel and
Timber West. These packages consist of the gift of tracts of public
land for their private use. These compensations are made because
some of the land that could have been forested is being converted
into parks or ceded to First Peoples as they are historical
aboriginal territories. The question, however, is should private
companies be compensated with public lands? And does the government
have the right to gift Crown land to private companies? These
compensation packages highlight the long-term impact of B.C.'s
current forestry practices. Compensation packages and B.C.'s
forestry policies in general do not at present take a long-term
view of conserving the province's resources, but instead focus on
immediate benefits. These practices are unprofitable in the long
term and will ultimately result in the loss of forests as a
resource in B.C. The province really needs to focus on practices
which may not provide immediate profit, but will have great
benefits in the long run. The public should have more input into
how forests are used and managed. 25 MAY 1999
