Lynx have adapted to life in the snow. They have huge feet that function as snow-shoes, allowing this tufted-eared cat to hunt in deep snow country without wasting energy by breaking trails.
Pine beetle growth feared
Pine beetle growth feared B.C. trees are again being threatened by the
mountain pine beetle. Last year's largest ever outbreak of
infestation is expected to double this year, devastating a part of
the province's trees. Government and forestry industry officials
have been tackling the problem over the winter, harvesting 4.2
million cubic metres of beetle-infested lodgepole pine. However,
there are still an estimated 6 million cubic metres of infested
trees left standing in a 350,000 hectare forest area. These trees
are valued at $1 billion. 7 MARCH 2000
