Tofino protesters end vigil after tree wins reprieve
Two men who have been living in an 800 year old Western red cedar climbed down yesterday. The ancient tree was scheduled to be cut down after an arborist's report that stated the tree is rotting. The two men came down after being promised that the tree won't be cut for another 45 days to give town council time to discuss other solutions. The council is worried that the tree may fall onto a nearby development. One possible solution would be to build a support structure that would prevent the tree from falling naturally.
