Apes source of hepatitis B?
A researcher from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, has discovered hepatitis B in three wild chimpanzees. Peter Simmonds believes that the virus co-evolved with primates 10 to 35 million years ago, and that different strains developed when the virus was passed to humans. His findings counter theories that the virus spread from the Americas about 400 years ago.
