Forbes Medi-Tech, a biotechnology company, is using a substance produced by trees as they are processed into pulp to develop products to control cholesterol and prevent heart disease. The substance is called "phytosterols" and is released naturally by the wood. Some byproducts of this substance are already in use in other medical applications. The byproduct, a plant sterol, has been shown to reduce blood cholesterol and reduce artherosclerosis. It is being tested for inclusion in various food products and for use as a drug.
