Kissing may cause cancer
Kissing may cause cancer A skin cancer called Kaposi's sarcoma is caused by
a form of the herpes virus that appears to be spread by kissing.
The virus, herpes virus 8, is found in much higher levels in saliva
than in other body fluids, and it is closely related to the virus
that causes mononucleosis, the "kissing disease." Herpes virus 8 is
still rare in North America, and Kaposi's sarcoma is mainly found
in individuals who also have HIV. However, the virus has been
present for centuries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East and it
is very likely that it will become more widespread in North America
soon. Kaposi's sarcoma cause purple skin blotches and can attack
internal organs as well. NOVEMBER 10, 2000
