Scientists have finally succeeded in growing in the lab a corkscrew-shaped kind of bacteria that lives in the intestines of termites. These bacteria curb the termites’ output of methane. It is hoped that this discovery may lead to the use of these bacteria to control the emission of methane by other microbes. Methane gas is a major contributor to global warming.
