Horticulturalist Thomas Ogren believes that pollen counts have skyrocketed in North America over the last few years because of the over-use of male plants for landscaping. He suggests using female plants in the garden to lower pollen counts. However, he concedes that just going to a garden centre and asking for a female plant has its problems as the typical nursery won’t know whether or not they are selling male or female plants.
