First Nations used scales of ponderosa pine or yellow pine trees to make small hot smokeless fires that cooled rapidly so their enemies would not be able to track them.
Hold your breath
Hold your breath China has initiated a campaign to reduce the
amount of air pollution it produces from its coal-fired electrical
plants. China is currently the world's second largest producer of
the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. These emissions come mostly from
the burning of coal. However, China has now improved its energy
efficiency, has shut down many heavily polluting industrial
boilers, and has cut use of coal by 30 percent. Unfortunately,
there are still some doubts about how committed to the pollution
reduction program the Chinese government actually is, and about how
effective the pollution reduction strategies will be when applied
in the country's many poor rural areas. 22 JANUARY 2000, P. 16-17
