It seems that when seagulls peck out the eyes of tiger snakes, the snakes don't really mind. The eye-less snakes grow just as long and gain as much weight as healthy ones. They even successfully track mates. The phenomenon of remaining healthy with the loss of a major sense offers evidence for the idea that some animals may be over-designed, possessing ancestral abilities that they no longer need.
