No stopping them Cane toads were introduced into Australia in 1935
in the hope that they would control the sugar cane beetle. They
failed in their task but have multiplied extensively and now
threaten to overrun many of Australia's important ecosystems.
Australian wildlife biologists had hoped to use a new virus which
kills the tadpoles of the cane toad to control its population, but
the plan has been scrapped after research showed that it could also
harm other, native amphibian species. The cane toad is extremely
poisonous and is a danger to most other native Australian
