Dying reefs place underwater world in jeopardy
Dying reefs place underwater world in jeopardy Coral reefs are considered to be one of the
world's most diverse and valuable ecological systems, but they have
suffered massive deterioration the world over. The Barbados reef is
suffering from a rapid decline in its diversity of coral species,
as well as an increase in coral bleaching (a sign of great stress).
Causes of coral deterioration include changes in water temperature,
human development, sewage, agricultural fertilizers and tourism.
Coral reefs are rich in biodiversity, are necessary for the
survival of many ocean species, and work to prevent shoreline
erosion and hurricane waves. Barbados is currently trying to
protect its coral reef from dying out. 15 MARCH 1999
