Pest spray linked to salmon survival Scientists have discovered what may solve the
mystery of healthy young salmon leaving their spawning grounds and
vanishing at sea. The cause may be a class of chemicals which is
suspected of causing gender anomalies in animals and may be
hampering the salmon's ability to change from freshwater to
saltwater fish by influencing their hormones. Gender-altering
compounds can change hormones in animals and give males female
characteristics. A fisheries scientist in New Brunswick believes
that there may be a relationship between chemical use and salmon
survival. It is known from previous studies that high levels of
nonylphenol" mimic the female hormone estrogen. New Brunswick,
Newfoundland and Nova Scotia used nonylphenol in pesticides for
approximately 10 years.
