Sucker!
Sucker! The ‘remora’ or ‘shark
sucker’ is a fish that attaches itself to sharks by using a
sucker on its head. The remora gets a free ride and eats any food
that happens to float by. Remoras have also been spotted on killer
whales, parrotfish, and even on ships. Gil Hewlett, of the
Vancouver Aquarium, reports that one of their resident remoras
pushed its luck a little too far recently and ended up being bitten
by the blacktip reef shark that it was hitching a ride on! The
remora is now recovering in a solitary area, waiting for its wounds
to heal. 28 JUNE 2000
