A species of sponge native to the Great Lakes is fighting the spread of the zebra mussel which is invading their waters. The sponge has started growing on the mussels' shells, thus preventing them from breathing or feeding. Through these techniques, the sponge has become fairly abundant and has managed to decrease the population of the zebra mussel by 20 to 40 per cent in some areas.
