We will fight them... A species of sponge native to the Great Lakes is
fighting the spread of the zebra mussel which is invading their
waters. The sponge has started growing on the mussels' shells, thus
preventing them from breathing or feeding. Through these
techniques, the sponge has become fairly abundant and has managed
to decrease the population of the zebra mussel by 20 to 40 per cent
in some areas. 3 JULY 1999, P. 25
