Erosion of Dover's white cliffs triggers concern
Erosion of Dover's white cliffs triggers concern The white cliffs of Dover are tumbling into the
sea and global warming is being blamed. The white chalk cliffs
naturally erode, but there have been more landslides and rockfalls
this year than any other since record-keeping began about 200 years
ago. The erosion has forced buildings and trails to be moved
inland, away from the cliff edge. The erosion is the result of the
heaviest rains ever recorded in Britain, a phenomenon linked to
global climate change. The rain is absorbed by the porous rock, and
eventually the top levels of the cliff become too heavy to be held
up by the bottom layers that are simultaneously being eroded by
waves. MAY 19, 2001
