Some researchers say that the ban on using toxic anti-fouling paints containing tributyltin (TBT) may not be as good for the marine environment as previously believed. TBT is used on the hulls of boats to kill barnacles. Since the ban, organisms such as mollusks which had been harmed are recovering, but new problems are showing up which are being blamed on other marine anti-fouling agents being used as a substitute for TBT.
