A dip in deep water

A dip in deep water
Cold water from the polar regions helps to drive deep ocean water circulation. This deep ocean circulation plays a role in large, sudden climate changes, such as the melting of glaciers. New research has concluded that the rate at which deep Southern Ocean water has recently been circulating is only about one-third of the rate for the previous 700 years. This recent change in the circulation rate is part of a continuing cycle of climate change which has been occurring about every 1500 years for the past 130,000 years. The last period of unusually cold weather occurred in Europe and lasted from about 1400 to 1900. It was called 'The Little Ice Age'.
